Discussion 6

I think the main key to poverty is education for Third World countries that do not have free and accessible schooling for their children. The children are always going to be the future so if kids continue to grow up uneducated there will be no leaders for their country or developing governments. Also, while bringing the world population up to the status of American Middle Class is not possible, being provided/get the opportunity for food, shelter, and healthcare should be something humans should be able to expect this day in age. With the extreme wealth in some parts of the world and then the extreme poverty, we must find a balance. One aspect of the global economy I don’t agree with is when First World countries and their companies exploit resources on less wealthy countries and we can claim all the resource provides. Granted, many of the countries do not have huge oil drilling companies like the U.S., but they should be compensated for their oil.

Focusing on finding efficient renewable energy sources and conserving our Earth are other ways to help the poor. Crops and main resources that people rely on to sustain life are directly affected by ignorance to global warming. If you think about the Turtle Fisherman from last weeks reading and say that the turtles have become extinct because their habitat has been destroyed by global warming, they end up with no means of an income.

Another way to help would be to stop buying products from overseas and only buy things made locally. In turn, this would provide more jobs for Americans and help the poor in our country. This is especially going to help the millions that work in factories that allow us to pay very little for our products and food. Educating these factory workers on their rights and how they can form unions would also improve their lives.

There is an obvious need to reform how our government works, and how the global economy is run. Our main concern should be the earth and all the humans that live on it, not how we can exploit every single resource and person to make money.
